I am partnering with the American Heart Association and chairing the 2019 Heart and Stroke Ball to celebrate the work Rhode Island Medical Imaging and Rhode Island Hospital has done over the past 3 years to transform stroke care delivery.
In the United States:
85% of strokes are ischemic strokes – strokes caused by a blocked blood vessel – and the most severe ischemic strokes are emergent large vessel occlusions (ELVOs). Without proper treatment, 75% of ELVO stroke patients will die or be disabled.
Early access to the cure - a surgical procedure called mechanical thrombectomy - at a Level I or Comprehensive Stroke Center can directly remove the clot and enable patients to return home and their normal lives.
In partnership with Rhode Island EMS professionals, I have worked tirelessly over the past 3 years to provide Rhode Islanders with more timely access to this life-saving procedure - mechanical thrombectomy - than anywhere else in the United States and the world.
But wouldn't it be even more amazing if we reduced the need for mechanical thrombectomy?
