Armand E. Sabitoni is a second-generation Laborer who worked his way from a general construction laborer to the second highest office in the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), when he was elected as General Secretary-Treasurer in 2001. With a deep appreciation of the labor movement’s traditions of justice and fairness, he utilizes innovative and successful programs to bring labor—and its ideals—into the 21st century. A member of LIUNA Local Union 271 since 1969, Mr. Sabitoni worked as a construction laborer, while attending the University of Rhode Island and continued his education at the New England School of Law in Boston graduating in 1980.
Along with his duties as General Secretary-Treasurer, he also serves as New England Regional Manager of the Laborers’ International Union representing over 60,000 members encompassing the six New England states as well as most of the state of New York.
Mr. Sabitoni has received numerous awards for his extraordinary efforts in the fields of health and safety, labor-management cooperation and training and education. A crowning achievement, he is the founder of the New England Laborers’/Cranston Public Schools Construction & Career Academy. A staunch proponent of fair and equitable workers’ compensation laws, Mr. Sabitoni co-authored the 1992 RI Workers’ Compensation statue, which serves as a model for all states.
